HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER OF THE MIGHTY LION BAND?

ARE THERE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE?

Band members are eligible receive a service award for their participation in any of our ensembles. Band scholarships are awarded on a (3) tier system. The awards are based on contribution to the group, abilities and recommendations of the students' high school director, as well as auditions and interviews by the EMCC Band Staff. The scholarships include:

1. PRIMARY SCHOLARSHIPS: Full tuition plus fees. Awarded based on a graduating band senior from EMCC district and/or recommendation from a band director. This applies at Scooba and Golden Triangle campus (THIS IS AN AUTOMATIC AWARD).

2. ADVANCED SCHOLARSHIPS: Full tuition, fees and 1/2 room and board for students on the Scooba campus. For students on the Golden Triangle campus, it includes full tuition and fees and up to $500 towards books (AUDITION AND INTERVIEW REQUIRED. THERE ARE A LIMITED NUMBER OF THESE SCHOLARSHIPS).

3. HONORS SCHOLARSHIP: Full tuition, fees, and full room and board for students on the Scooba campus. For students on the Golden Triangle campus, it includes full tuition and fees and up to $1000 towards books (AUDITION AND INTERVIEW REQUIRED. THERE ARE A LIMITED NUMBER OF THESE SCHOLARSHIPS).

HOW MUCH TIME DOES BAND REQUIRE?

The marching band rehearses only 1.5 hours a day, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Auxiliary and Percussion must attend an additional rehearsal on Tuesday for the same amount of time.

IF I ATTEND THE MAYHEW CAMPUS, CAN I BECOME A MEMBER OF THE MIGHTY LION BAND?

Absolutely. Beginning Fall 2013, students enrolled at our Mayhew campus may become members of the Mighty Lion Band. Transportation will be provided to and from the campus for rehearsals and performances. Although it is not required, it is recommended that members of the auxiliary and percussion sections reside on the main campus, as transportation will not be provided from the Mayhew on Tuesdays. Students will be responsible for their own method of transportation of those rehearsal days.

DO BAND MEMBERS RECEIVE ACADEMIC CREDIT?

Band members receive academic credit each semester. These credits satisfy elective requirements in most majors. In addition, there is no tuition charge for musical ensembles, even in a class overload situation.

ARE ALL BAND MEMBERS MUSIC MAJORS?

No. You do not have to be music major to be a member of the Mighty Lion Band. The band program consists of students from almost every department and program at East Mississippi Community College.

ARE AUXILIARY UNITS PART OF THE PROGRAM?

Dancers, flags and feature twirlers are incorporated into the marching band rehearsals and performances. These units have a one-hour sectional rehearsal prior to each regular band rehearsal. Auditions for these groups will be announced at a later date. Learn more about auxiliary units here.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT BEING A MEMBER OF THE MIGHTY LION BAND THAN MY HIGH SCHOOL BAND?

The Mighty Lion Band offers you many of the positive benefits that you have already experienced from your band membership. Friends, travel, and the satisfaction of playing great music are all a part of being in the band here. But there is nothing like being a part of the high energy generated on game day on the East Mississippi Community College campus.
